Altit Fort stands on a sheer rock edge high above the Hunza river, a short distance from Karimabad. Its watchtower is often described as the oldest standing structure in Gilgit-Baltistan, and the fort predates Baltit as the residence of Hunza's rulers.
After restoration by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, with Norwegian support, the fort opened to visitors and the old village around it was rehabilitated. Below it lies the former royal garden, with orchards, an old pond and a women-run restaurant serving Hunza dishes.
