Ganish is a compact walled village just below Karimabad, with old wooden mosques, a watchtower, a communal pond and houses built tightly together for defence. Its restored mosques and the conserved Ali Gohar House have received UNESCO Asia-Pacific heritage awards, and community groups have been closely involved in their care.
A few minutes away, the boulders known as the Sacred Rock of Hunza, or Haldeikish, carry carvings and inscriptions left by travellers over many centuries: ibex, Buddhist imagery, and writing in several scripts, including Kharosthi, Brahmi and Sogdian. Together they show how long people have passed through this valley.
