Music in Hunza has long marked the moments of community life, with tunes for weddings, sowing and harvest. Instruments include the dadang drum, smaller damal drums, the surnai pipe, flutes, the rubab and local stringed instruments.
A music centre set up in Altit's royal garden in 2016 now teaches young people through a traditional teacher-and-apprentice model. This experience is an informal session with musicians, with time to hear about the instruments and the songs, and, where appropriate, to join in a dance.
