In Kargah Nala, a side valley just west of Gilgit, a standing Buddha is carved in low relief within a niche high on a cliff face. It is generally dated to around the 7th century, when Gilgit was an important Buddhist centre on routes between South and Central Asia.
Nearby, a Buddhist monastery and stupas yielded important Sanskrit manuscripts in the 1930s. Local legend tells a different story: that the figure is a demoness pinned to the rock. The visit is short and easily combined with time in Gilgit's bazaars.
