Nauroz, the Persian new year, is widely celebrated in Gilgit-Baltistan on 21 March and is a regional holiday. Across the valleys, people gather for prayers, music and dancing, and freestyle polo matches are played in many places.
Customs vary by area: children compete in egg-striking games with decorated eggs, families share special dishes with neighbours, and in some places swings are hung from trees. In Khaplu, a multi-day programme has combined Nauroz with Pakistan Day on 23 March.
