Khaplu Palace, also called Yabgo Khar, was built in the mid-19th century for the rulers of Khaplu and was home to the family until long after their kingdom ended. Its layered timber, mud-brick and carved woodwork show influences from Tibet, Ladakh and Kashmir. The Aga Khan Trust for Culture restored it between 2005 and 2011, and it now houses a museum and a heritage hotel.
A short walk away, Chaqchan Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in the region, with a construction date usually given as 1370 and timber-framed walls wrapped by a veranda. Together the two buildings tell the story of Khaplu's faith, power and craftsmanship.
