Kharpocho, 'the king of forts', crowns a rocky ridge above Skardu and was the stronghold of the Maqpon rulers of Baltistan. It changed hands during the Dogra campaigns of the 19th century and was fought over again in 1948. Much of it is now in ruins, but the climb rewards visitors with sweeping views of the Indus, its sandy plain and the town below.
Afterwards, the experience turns to the table. Balti cooking is mild and built around local grains, apricot oil, walnuts and herbs: dishes such as prapu noodles with a walnut-and-mint paste, thick balay soups and buckwheat breads with butter, served with salty butter tea.
Day 1
A steep path from the town up to the ridge-top ruins.
