Shigar Fort, known locally as Fong-khar, was the seat of the rulers of Shigar and stands against a rock outcrop at the edge of a green, orchard-filled valley north of Skardu. The Aga Khan Trust for Culture restored it as a heritage guesthouse, an early example in Pakistan of conservation paid for through adaptive reuse.
The restoration went beyond the fort itself: nearby settlements were rehabilitated, water and sanitation improved, and historic wooden mosques conserved. A visit combines the fort's carved woodwork and garden with a walk through the surrounding lanes and fields.
