Gilgit to Skardu: The Indus Road

The S-1 runs 167 km from Jaglot on the Karakoram Highway, near the meeting of the Gilgit and Indus rivers, to Skardu. Upgraded and widened by the Frontier Works Organization and inaugurated in December 2021, it follows the Indus through a deep gorge with many tight turns above the river.

The road is paved, but planned tunnels and realignments were not built, and landslides, rockfall and earthquakes have closed it for days at a time. This concept takes the gorge in a single riding day with time at both ends. Timing varies with road and weather conditions.
