Overview
Khaplu lies roughly 100 km east of Skardu, at about 2,600 m on the Shyok River near its confluence with the Indus. The road follows the river valley out of the Skardu basin, crosses the Shyok and climbs gently to the town, where the Raja Palace is described as the finest Tibetan-style palace in Pakistan.
Motorcycling references rate the river road highly for scenery, with sweeping rather than tight bends. This concept rides out to Khaplu, allows a full day there, and returns to Skardu. Timing varies with road and weather conditions.
