Naltar is a pine-forested side valley north of Gilgit, known for its alpine lakes and as a winter ski area. From the upper village of Naltar Bala a dirt track follows the stream through the forest to Satrangi, the largest of the lakes, whose name refers to its shifting colours.
Most visitors drive the track, but walking it lets you enjoy the forest and stream at a slower pace. Smaller lakes lie further up the valley and make a good extension on foot.
Day 1
Drive from Gilgit into the Naltar valley, then an afternoon walk around the village and forest. Timing varies with road and weather conditions.
Overnight: Guesthouse in Naltar
Day 2
Walk the forest track beside the stream to Satrangi Lake, explore the lakes nearby, then return by jeep to Naltar and on to Gilgit.
Highest point: 3,215 m
