The Rupal valley sits on the southern side of Nanga Parbat. From the village of Tarashing, reached by jeep from Astore, the trail crosses the snout of the Tarashing Glacier and follows the valley past Rupal village to a pasture used as base camp by early German expeditions and named after their leader, Karl Herrligkoffer.
The reward is a direct view up the Rupal Face. Longer variations continue up-valley to the Latobo and Shaigiri pastures or towards Mazeno base camp; this sample keeps to a compact out-and-back with a day for exploring above base camp.
Day 1
Drive up the Rupal side valley to Tarashing and settle in. Timing varies with road and weather conditions.
Overnight: Guesthouse or camp in Tarashing
Day 2
Cross the glacier snout with care and walk through Rupal village and pastures to the base camp meadow.
Overnight: Camp at Herrligkoffer Base Camp Highest point: 3,600 m
Day 3
Day walk further up the valley towards the Latobo pasture for changing angles on the Rupal Face, returning to camp.
Overnight: Camp at Herrligkoffer Base Camp
Day 4
Walk back down the valley and recross the glacier snout.
Overnight: Tarashing
Day 5
Jeep back to Astore. Timing varies with road and weather conditions.
